SOS! My 7-Year-Old Son Was Bitten by This Bug—What Could It Be?

Finding an unfamiliar insect in your home is unsettling, especially when a child has been bitten. A frightening-looking insect is not necessarily dangerous, and identifying the species from a description alone can be difficult.

One possibility mentioned in the original story is an earwig. These insects are recognizable by the pair of pincers, or forceps, at the end of their abdomen.

What Are Earwigs?

Earwigs are small insects that commonly appear in gardens, yards, damp areas, and sometimes inside homes.

Despite their intimidating appearance, earwigs are generally considered harmless to people. Their pincers can pinch if the insect is handled, but they are not venomous and are not known for routinely attacking people.

The old belief that earwigs crawl into people's ears and burrow into their brains is a myth.

Could an Earwig Cause a Bite?

An earwig can use its pincers defensively, but a painful-looking mark on a child's skin does not automatically prove that an earwig caused it.

Many insects can produce similar-looking red bumps, including mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs, ants, and other biting insects. Without seeing the insect or having a reliable identification, it is better not to claim that a particular species caused the bite.

If you still have the insect, do not handle it with bare hands. Take a clear photograph or carefully capture it in a container for identification.

Why Are Earwigs Appearing Around the House?

Earwigs prefer dark, damp environments. They may be found around:

  • Moist soil

  • Gardens and flower beds

  • Leaves and organic debris

  • Cracks around doors and windows

  • Damp basements or other humid areas

  • Decaying vegetation or wood

Finding one or two does not necessarily mean there is an infestation.

If large numbers are appearing indoors, however, it is worth checking for excessive moisture, damaged seals, leaks, or areas where insects can easily enter.

A Simple Way to Reduce Earwigs Outdoors

The original story describes using a shallow container with a small amount of vegetable or olive oil as a trap.

If you use any homemade insect trap, keep it completely inaccessible to children and pets and place it where it cannot be knocked over.

More importantly, reducing the conditions that attract earwigs is usually a better long-term strategy.

Try to:

  • Remove piles of leaves and damp organic material near the house.

  • Reduce excessive moisture around foundations.

  • Repair leaking outdoor faucets or pipes.

  • Seal cracks and gaps around doors and windows.

  • Keep vegetation and mulch from accumulating directly against the building.

What Should You Do About the Bite?

For a minor insect bite or sting, gently wash the area with soap and water and avoid scratching it.

A cool compress can help reduce discomfort and swelling.

Keep an eye on the area over the next several hours. If the redness continues to expand, becomes increasingly painful, develops significant swelling, or shows signs of infection, contact a healthcare professional.

Get urgent medical help if your child develops:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat

  • Widespread hives

  • Fainting or severe weakness

  • Rapidly worsening symptoms

These can indicate a serious allergic reaction.

Don't Judge an Insect by Its Appearance

Some insects look frightening simply because of their unusual body shape. Earwigs are a good example: their pincers can make them look much more dangerous than they actually are.

So if you discover similar bugs around your house, don't panic. First identify the insect, check the area for moisture or entry points, and determine whether there is actually an ongoing pest problem.

And if a child has been bitten, focus on the child's symptoms rather than assuming the insect's identity from the appearance of the bite alone.

Bottom line: Earwigs can look alarming, but they are generally not dangerous to humans. A suspected insect bite should be monitored carefully, and any signs of a serious allergic reaction require immediate medical attention.
