Why Do Some People Sprinkle Baking Soda Under the Bed?
Every family seems to have that one person who swears by an old household trick that sounds strange at first.
For my grandmother, it was always baking soda.
Every night before going to bed, she’d sprinkle a small amount underneath her bed. The first time I saw her do it, I couldn’t help but laugh. She simply smiled and said, “One day you’ll understand why.”
Years later, I finally looked into it—and while it isn’t magic, there are a few practical reasons why many people still use this old trick.
1. It Helps Neutralize Odors
Baking soda is one of the best natural odor absorbers available.
Unlike air fresheners that simply mask unpleasant smells, baking soda works by neutralizing odor-causing compounds. Because dust, pet hair, and moisture often collect under the bed, odors can gradually develop over time.
Sprinkling a small amount of baking soda underneath the bed may help keep the area smelling fresher.
2. It Can Absorb Moisture
Hidden spaces under furniture often trap humidity, especially in warm or poorly ventilated rooms.
Baking soda can absorb small amounts of moisture, helping reduce damp odors and making the area feel fresher.
