Sofa Mystery: I found this in a crack in the sofa… Please don’t tell me it’s bed bugs!

Don’t panic! Take a deep breath. While I can’t offer a medical or pest control diagnosis, I can help you analyze this objectively. You can find all sorts of things in sofas that look creepy but are completely harmless.

To (hopefully) rule out bed bugs, pay attention to the following details:

The “search check”: Does it look like this?

Adult bed bugs: They are about 4–7 mm long, flat like an apple seed, and reddish-brown. If they have just fed, they are more plump and dark red.

The “shed skins”: Bed bugs molt. If you have only found transparent, amber-colored “empty skins,” this could be a clue.

Droppings: This is often the clearest sign. These are tiny, black dots (like ink from a fountain pen), often appearing in groups and easily smeared with a damp cloth.

The “Harmless Alternatives” (Much More Likely!)
Often, the find in the sofa is far less dramatic:

Lash beetle larvae: These small, hairy “sausages” (often striped) love dark crevices and enjoy feeding on organic debris (skin flakes, hair, wool). They are annoying, but they don’t bite.

Carpet beetles: Small, round, often patterned beetles. Their larvae look similar to those of rash beetles.

Flax seeds or plant parts: Sounds funny, but it’s true. If you’ve eaten on the sofa, dried seeds or crumbs often look surprisingly like insect eggs or other insects.

Lint and dirt: A mixture of textile fibers and dust collects in sofa crevices, which can appear quite organic under certain lighting conditions.

What you should do now:

Don’t squash it! If it’s a bed bug, this will leave unsightly bloodstains, and the (sweetish) smell isn’t pleasant either.

The tape method: Carefully stick the find to a piece of tape or place it in a glass. This way, you can examine it closely with a magnifying glass or a macro camera (smartphone) without touching it.

Hot wash: If you’re unsure, wash all removable covers or pillows at 60°C (or freeze them for 48 hours if they aren’t washable at high temperatures).

A little reassurance: Bed bugs are called that because they prefer places where people lie still for long periods (in bed at night). While a sofa is a possibility, they’re usually only found there if the infestation in the bedroom is already severe.
